What I Pack for a Cruise: My Favorite Cruise Essentials

I’ve learned that the right cruise essentials can make a big difference once I’m onboard. I’ve learned that the right cruise essentials can make a big difference once I’m onboard. I don’t want to overpack, but I also don’t want to spend my vacation wishing I had brought something simple from home. Over time, I’ve figured out which items actually make cruising easier and more comfortable.

I still pack for fun, of course. Cute outfits are coming with me. But comfort, organization, and convenience have definitely moved higher on my list.

A good travel bag is one of the first things I think about. On embarkation day, I prefer to have my important items with me rather than put everything in my checked luggage.

I usually keep my phone, charger, medications, travel documents, sunglasses, skincare, and anything else I might need before my luggage arrives at the cabin.

Packing organizers also help me tremendously. I like being able to open my suitcase and actually find things instead of digging through one giant pile of clothes.

These are the packing cubes I use to keep my suitcase organized.

And yes, I bring a portable charger. Between taking photos, checking the cruise app, messaging, and exploring ports, my phone gets plenty of use.

Comfort Items That Make Cruise Days Easier

Comfort matters more to me now than it did years ago. I still want to look good, but I am officially retired from suffering for an outfit. šŸ˜‚

I pack comfortable walking shoes for port days, lightweight clothing that I can layer, a hat, sunglasses, and a small crossbody bag.

I also bring a few skincare favorites. Sun, wind, air-conditioning, and long days outside can leave my skin feeling dry, so keeping my routine simple works best for me.

These are some of the same things that help me when [traveling through menopause]. A little preparation goes a long way when temperatures—and occasionally my own internal thermostat—decide to change without warning.

Why I Keep My Cruise Packing Simple

My favorite cruise essentials are the ones that solve real problems. If something keeps me organized, comfortable, charged, or makes the trip easier, it earns space in my suitcase.

I’ve also learned not to bring something just because another traveler says it’s a ā€œmust-have.ā€ We all travel differently. What works for me may not be essential for someone else.

That’s why I prefer sharing products I personally use and would pack again. You can also see more of my favorite travel essentials that I take on different kinds of trips.

Most importantly, I leave a little room in my suitcase. Between shopping in port and finding something onboard that I absolutely did not need—but somehow needed šŸ˜‚ā€”that extra space usually comes in handy.

Cruising should feel like a vacation, not a packing competition. A few smart cruise essentials, comfortable clothes, and a sense of humor are usually enough for me.
