Catalina Island: Exploring Colorful Avalon by the Sea

It has that relaxed island feeling, yet you’re still in California.
I spent my time simply exploring — walking along the waterfront, wandering through Avalon, taking in the views, and, of course, stopping constantly to take pictures. Everywhere I looked, there seemed to be another little detail worth remembering.
And with a sky this blue, my camera was definitely working overtime. 💙

Arriving in Avalon
Arriving in Avalon on Catalina Island is part of the experience itself. Before you even start exploring, the harbor gives you a beautiful introduction to the island — turquoise water, boats scattered across the bay, palm trees along the shoreline, and the hills of Avalon rising behind it all.
I especially loved seeing the Catalina Casino from the water. Its distinctive round building stands along the harbor’s edge and has become one of the most recognizable sights on Catalina Island.
Despite its name, the Catalina Casino isn’t a gambling casino. The historic building has long been associated with entertainment, dancing, movies and island social life.
The First Views of Catalina Island
For me, some of the best moments were the simple ones: looking across the harbor, watching the boats, and realizing there really wasn’t any reason to rush.
Avalon is compact enough that once you arrive, you can start experiencing the town almost immediately. The waterfront is right there, and much of downtown is easy to explore on foot.

Walking Around Avalon

One of my favorite things about Catalina Island was simply walking around Avalon. You don’t need a complicated itinerary to enjoy this part of the island. Sometimes the best way to experience a place is to wander, look around, and see what catches your attention.
Avalon has so much character packed into a small area. Colorful storefronts line the streets, palm trees seem to appear everywhere, and homes climb the hills overlooking the harbor. It feels coastal and relaxed, but it also has an old-fashioned charm that makes it different from many California beach towns.
As I walked farther from the waterfront, I started noticing the architecture even more. Some buildings are bright and playful, while others have porches, balconies, and details that give Avalon a completely different personality.

A Town Made for Wandering
One thing I liked about Avalon was how easy it was to enjoy without constantly checking a schedule. I could walk along the waterfront, turn onto one of the side streets, browse around town, and then find myself back beside the harbor.
That slower pace is part of what made Catalina Island memorable for me.
There are plenty of activities available if you want them, but I also think there’s something special about leaving room in a travel day to simply explore.
And yes… take way too many pictures. 😂📸
The Avalon Waterfront

The Avalon waterfront on Catalina Island was probably the part I could have walked over and over again. The water really is that beautiful — shades of turquoise and deep blue, with boats scattered across the harbor and the green hills surrounding the town.
It’s one of those places where even a simple walk feels like part of the vacation.
The waterfront promenade is perfect for slowing down and taking everything in. On one side, you have the harbor and boats. On the other hand, Avalon’s shops, restaurants, and buildings sit just steps away.
What I loved most was how the scenery kept changing as I walked. One minute I was looking across the water toward the hills, and a few minutes later I had a completely different view of the harbor.
A View Worth Slowing Down For
There’s something about being near the water that makes me slow down. I didn’t feel like I needed to rush from attraction to attraction or check things off a list.
Sometimes travel is better when you give yourself permission to simply enjoy where you are.
And Avalon is very good at making you want to do exactly that.
The Catalina Casino
One building immediately stands out when you look across Avalon Harbor — the Catalina Casino.
With its distinctive circular shape at the water’s edge, it has become one of the most recognizable landmarks on Catalina Island. I had seen pictures of it before, but seeing it surrounded by blue water and palm trees was completely different.
And here’s the funny part: despite the name, this isn’t the kind of casino where you pull a slot machine and hope for vacation money. 😂
More Than a Casino
The word “casino” was traditionally used to describe a gathering or entertainment place, and that’s exactly what the Catalina Casino became.
The building has been an important part of Avalon’s history, known for entertainment, movies, dancing and social events. Its architecture also lends this part of Catalina Island a wonderful sense of old-California glamour.

The Views From Inside
One of my favorite parts was looking through the windows.
Instead of seeing just the building itself, I could look out and see Catalina framed almost like a painting — blue ocean, palm trees, mountains, and pieces of Avalon appearing through the old windows.
That combination of history inside and island scenery outside made these views especially memorable for me.
Looking through those windows reminded me of why I enjoy photographing places when I travel. Sometimes the photograph isn’t just about the famous landmark. It’s about what you saw while you were standing inside it.
And this was definitely a view worth remembering.
A Catalina Island Day I’d Happily Do Again
Looking back, what I enjoyed most about Catalina Island was how easy the day felt. I didn’t need to rush from one attraction to another to feel like I had experienced something special.
Walking around Avalon, taking pictures along the waterfront, admiring the hillside homes, and exploring the Catalina Casino gave me plenty to remember. Sometimes the simplest travel days end up being some of my favorites.
Catalina Island also reminded me how much I enjoy destinations where the journey is part of the experience. Arriving by water, seeing Avalon come into view, and then exploring on foot made the whole day feel like a little adventure.
Would I go back? Absolutely. There is still more of Catalina Island I’d like to see, and I certainly wouldn’t complain about another day surrounded by that gorgeous blue water. 💙
